Ross’s story: from slipped disc to half ironman

Ross when he first joined - 2017

In May 2017, Ross faced a physical crisis. After rupturing one of two slipped discs, he underwent a microdiscectomy. This major spinal surgery often leaves patients cautious and fearful of movement. At that stage, the objective was not athletic performance. It was simply to regain function and manage pain.

On the advice of a friend, Ross came to The Pit Singapore in July 2017. The recommendation came with a strict caveat. This would not be a passive recovery. It required grit.

"A mate convinced me that The PIT was the best place to do my rehab through strength and flexibility training, as long as I was committed to the work. He was right."

We began with a disciplined, structural approach to rehabilitation. The priority was rebuilding the posterior chain and restoring mobility to the spine without compromising the surgical repair. The process was not about quick fixes. It was about the consistent, daily application of strength principles.

The transformation has been absolute. Ross went from guarding a surgical scar to becoming pain-free almost every day. He did not just achieve his initial hope of getting "back on his bike". He surpassed it entirely, going on to complete an Ironman triathlon.

What began as a necessity for rehab has evolved into a permanent lifestyle change.

"I don’t think I’ll ever quit disciplined strength training."
